    clockerman
    (50 items)

Picked this piece up from a thrift. Its in rough shape but it still has a nice look. Trying to find any information on the artist ,, Vincent or Vincente.
Its on the painting in the lower right corner, in the last photo ,hardly noticeable.
Wooden frame measures 13 x 10 inches in glass. It appears old but I wonder how old?

      ??

Can you take another shot of the name?

Something Vincent Tommy or something like that.

      .....maybe Vincent Van Gough? LOL....??

I think it is a Good Piece, IMHO.....I would take it somewhere

    2. clockerman clockerman, 10 years ago
Yeah that would be a hoot,, Vincent Van Gogh. I ll take another picture of the name but it is very light on the painting. I just love the rough sketchy look.
    3. clockerman clockerman, 10 years ago
Took another shot of the name,,its difficult because its almost under the wooden frame.
      Thanks for the love everyone.

It sure has a Van Gogh look to it. I'm with Rose on this one. I'd be a bit excited because you never know. Could be a sketch for a painting that was never created.

Take a look at this clockerman ! Maybe this is his sketch or someones copy of this painting ! -Mike-

      Hey Mike
Thanks alot,,I must have looked at about a million paintings by Van Gogh but didnt see this one. How did you find it? Wow its pretty similar. I guess its worth having it looked at by somebody. You know I have had this sitting on my floor in the spare bedroom almost forgotten.I didnt even notice the water stain or whatever it is on the bottom left until I took the photo.
Thanks again for the great information. CW is fantastic.

      Oh Wow..... Van Gough

It is the same as here but unpainted ( I just highlighted that single image only) here
      http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/gogh/landscapes/gogh.old-mill.jpg

Better check it out....is it a sketch....or what? Is a repro? Who knows....but I would take it somewhere.....and not let it out of my site till I know for sure

Your welcome clockerman. He also signed a lot of his works with just "Vincent" but he would write his "t" on the end almost like an "L" so it may look like a "E" being so faint. Here's hoping it's something special and not just an amateur copy !

      So who knows?

Do not want to get your hopes up -- as it still could be a copy. Whatever it is -- Worth checking it out by a very reliable source!!

      ???

here is a place that does them, but on-line -- unless you live close by them?

      http://www.freemanart.ca/van_gogh.htm

...or contact a place like Christies too...as very reputable!!

Very interesting. Thanks for those links Antique Rose.
I did some reading about art forgeries and they have been doing this since the beginning of time. Hey it was worth the 6 Bucks. It will give me a project to do this summer.
      BTW
I don't think it is a sketch because there are deep brush marks or something that look like brush marks. The photos are deceptive because the painting,,and I am calling it a painting for now,,is very brown and dull. I want to learn more about Art appreciation, I have a little book on Art studies and its a lot of information to digest.
    13. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
I think calling it a "sketch" might be misleading because most people think of pencil. charcoal or pen and ink. Another word would be "study" if the "Old Mill" were painted from memory it could be like a dry run before he did the actual painting. Then it would most likely have been done in just about any medium. This is all speculation of course but it's something that's a possibility. You just never know. They've been finding art works for the last couple of years in the strangest places.

Oh Boy I am gonna be a millionaire:)
Letter from Van Gogh to his brother same time as when the painting was allegedly done.
"Now I believe that this is never going to stop. And my idea is that a living studio, you’ll never find one ready-made, but it’s created from one day to the next through work and staying patiently in the same place. I have a study of an old mill, painted in broken tones6 like the Oak on the rock; that study which you said you had framed with the sower."
Could I really have found that Van Gogh study?

Finger crossed for you....Hope the best

Even if nothing, it has character and rustic charm....and a keeper IMHO!

The pieces seem to be falling into place clockerman. He did write his brother quite a bit and discuss his work. A lot of his work is very well documented this way. I think they just found one of his paintings recently that they couldn't attribute to him. They then found a letter to his brother discussing the same painting. So it's not beyond the realm of possibility that this is a study for his painting "The Old Mill". This is what keeps all of us collectors going ! Great eye.. and great find. Hope yours is the next big art discovery ! -Mike-

Here's the link to the painting I was talking about above.

Hey Mikl, thanks for the link and the compliment. I hardly ever even take a glance at the Art and paintings in thrift shops. This one was laying on the floor and I walked by it a few times. I noticed it appeared to be old, took a closer look and saw the name and then said no way and put it down. Then just before I was to leave. I liked the painting for its crude, rough aged look, I bought it for a few bucks.
That would be a lot of fun if it turns out to be the real thing. Thanks again for the information and the link.

Is the image a print or actually done in paint? It's hard to tell in these photos whether there is this oil paint or just a flat piece of paper behind the glass...If the latter, it is certainly a reprint and not necessary to take to an appraiser. If it is an actual study the surface will be thickly textured with paint.
    20. clockerman clockerman, 10 years ago
Oh yes it is very thickly painted very rough certainly not a picture.
    21. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
it looks like a very faded print to me. there are prints made which have the brush strokes printed in 3-d. have you seen those? i hope it's everything you hope for, but i thought i'd add my 2 cents.
    22. Hunter Hunter, 10 years ago
something about the discoloration near the water-stain in the corner just seems to mark it as a print to me as well....
    23. clockerman clockerman, 10 years ago
      I can dream can't I.
Besides that what should I do , is there any way I could tell if its a print. I feel like taking it out of the frame. If its a print its in terrible shape, if its a real study or painting, then I have to figure out if it was done by an art student or ???
I am having fun anyway, thanks for all the comments.

Is there something new about it 12 months later? Did you show it to an expert?
I just saw it and was excited as it screams Van Gogh!
    26. clockerman clockerman, 9 years ago
Alas, I took the picture out of the frame and it was only a print.
      I still love the art.
Was very thrilling for awhile, and it opened my eyes to more art.

Oh! At least, you had great moments with excitation and research :-)
