      Still just guessing as I have no idea how big yours is.....but some kind of Tool maybe for leather

      If it was used to repair sails the needle should be triangular shaped. Try researching sliding point needle or perhaps sail makers sliding point needle. This has adjustable thrust so obviously it can go through different thicknesses of material.

      Are there any patent numbers anywhere on it? If so, you can do a search at http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.htm and find out what you can that way. It's very cool and unusual! Keep us updated!

      It is a tool used to make rugs. The needle at the end pokes the yarn or fabric through a backing and then moves on to a next stitch and so on.
