This pair of mystery objects was found among our possessions. Each measures about 4-1/2 inches high. The base is black onyx, about 4 inches square. On top of that sits a glass cube measuring about 2inches on each side and with a cylindrical well in the middle. Next going up is a small metal saucer, in which sits a 1-1/2 inch globe that is thick glass with holes top and bottom. There is no indication of manufacture or possible use.

    What could they be?

Replying to Sean68: I thought of inkwells too, but the hole in the bottom of the glass globe, leading down to the glass cube, measures only 1/4 inch, so if the top and bottom parts were still glued together, you could pour ink in and it would go all the way to the bottom, where a normal dipping pen would not reach.
