I don't know anything about this shoeshine box. I paid around $10 for it a few years ago. Anyone know it's age or who made it?

    Thanks! :)

My paternal grandparents had some stands similar to this one in their small dept. store in n.w. La. The chairs where someone sat trying on the shoes was up much higher (one large step up) and the reasoning was, it helped the clerk that was waiting on the customer to not have to bend over so far. Kinda brought the buyers feet up to a more comfortable working level. A super cool piece and one that brings back many fond memories of the store.

Awesome info and story! Thanks for commenting. I always assumed it was a shoeshine box but wasn't sure why it was that fancy. Do you think it was originally a stand in a dept store and maybe was turned into a shoeshine box later?

Not sure. The boxes from the "old store" days were a wee bit smaller but not by much. They still had the box/storage area which held the "shoe horn" and that weird shaped metal thing that measured your foot size, along with a bottle of talcum powder. It seems kinda big for a shine box but then again it could, very well be. I wouldn't mark the mystery "solved" just yet but would keep gathering data until you're sure. Regardless it's a very unique piece. Good luck in your search for "truth".
