This is a little different from my usual early 20th-century postings, but why not? I have a weakness for boxes and really like polished wood, so I was delighted when I found this wooden box on a recent flea market. It is a smallish box made of Palisander (Brazilian rosewood) with a silver inlay of pretty leaves, in all likelihood a cigar box. These boxes are not unusual to find on markets and auctions, and they come in many sizes with different types of decoration: silver, ceramic plaques, enamel etc. Some are quite expensive if they are stamped or made by a known artist/company.
Because of its beauty Palisander (Dalbergia nigra) been used extensively for furniture etc. the last 350 years or so and today it's almost extinct. Genuine Palisander has a faint vanilla-like scent and this a also the case with this box (impressive considering that it's more than 50 years old!).
Dimensions: 12.5 cm x 10 cm x 4 cm. There is no mark on the box, but I have seen some very similar ones made by a company named Andersen & Soehoel (Aarhus, Denmark), so maybe they made this, too...
Many thanks, moonstone, Violet, agh, vetraio and geo!
