Wooden Russian (presumably) doll or figurine

I got this at the thrift store this weekend for 3.99. It is so exquisitely painted and in excellent condition. I have no idea how old it is, or if it's worth anything, or even if it's handmade. But it sure is wonderfully detailed! It's wooden, a little over 9 inches tall. There is string in it, so it kind of moves, but as you can see from the back picture, it has come out on one side. Any ideas out there? I couldn't find anything on Google image that matched.
