This is an exceptionally! good 'find' which arrived this morning, one I have been waiting for with juuust! a little concern for it's safety but! here it is and I am very pleased to share this beautiful Fritz Heckert c1885 claret jug with you.
In lovely condition with all the enameling and gold enamelling intact. The Cranberry/ruby glass has soft gold luster to it which is hard to show in the photos. The pewter (I think) handle has the most wonderful detail on it. The hinge has broken at sometime in it's life and has been expertly reproduced, and in time I hope will darken with age, otherwise you wouldn't know it wasn't original.
It stands...28.5cm or 11.1/4 tall

Hello Inky! Just a thought, the repair is so well done that it is a shame to keep is shiny. I am not sure if it would work, but there is a product "MaxBlack" that is a chemical patina used to antique silver. Maybe it would also work on this piece? You just brush it on and rinse it off.
Hi Sammy, thank you for your help, it would be nice that it blended in and I have google the pruduct that you mentioned, and although we can’t get that exact (and I shall do further investigation) there is ‘similar’..my fear is the the way it looks now it’s honest with what it is, and using a product to try and hide it and it doesn’t quite match it will look worse but ! as I said I shall try and find something now I know there is ‘stuff’ out there and do some testing…thanks again..
