I am so excited, I just found this great Aladdin lamp at my local Goodwill for six bucks. The only reason I had a clue what it was is because I was watching a movie and there was a prop lamp that I fell in love with and figured out it was an Aladdin lamp and consequently how collectible they were. So when I saw this beauty, I snatched it up! It really appeals to the glass collector in me and after a frendzied night of research, I found these lamps fascinating. I think I'm hooked. I plan to start restoring it and getting it in working order very soon!
This was a "Steal"!! Beautiful Lamp Fentonia!!
Thanks AGH and Moonstone for the love!!!
Thanks for the love and the comment LOUMANAL:) I think it was a steal, too. Now I just need to order a chimney and get to work!
I remember doing my homework by the light of an Aladdin lamp in the mid-50's. When it was properly operating, it would make a comforting "humming" noise and provide bright lighting. These glass Aladdins would be sold with a Spider and a parchment shade but my mother would only put the shade on when visitors came.....to impress them I suppose. She was always afraid that us kids would damage the shade so it was rarely on the lamp. RER(BOB)
Thanks for the story, Bob. Moms are funny about stuff like that, aren't they? I'm glad you confirmed about the parchment shade. Last night I came across a dealer display photo from the same year this lamp was made. Although I know glass shades were available then, all the lamps in the photo wore parchment shades. Between that and your story, if I decide to find this lamp a tripod and shade, I think that's the way to go!
