This is a beautiful trunk and a very early one -- perhaps late 1700's to early 1800's. The brass studding is magnificent. Thank you for the post and welcome to Collectors Weekly!!!

Thanks trunkman! I've taken it to be restored. Shame some of the pics went up upside down.

Can you recommend a site where I could do a bit more research on finding how old it is?
    4. trunkman trunkman, 11 years ago
I do not know of a site where that could happen for you -- I do have a similar but smaller trunk on my site and one indication of age were the screws on the front lock plate. Looks like yours has four original screws on it -- take one out and examine how it was made and go online to view history of screws to get an idea. There is a long conversation on my post with similar questions being answered. I will bring it up for you to see and read. The type of trunk and design patterning is quite similar to two of my trunks (and others of that era) which would place this one in the early 1800's. Good luck with your research!!

Also a good look at a nail head will help to discern age... (not a stud but a nail)

There is a little heading on the top of my site that says... see all 116 posts... and the rest will scroll down for you... This one is beautiful and looks more like dowry chest.
