This is a brown, leather box or chest or something. I'm not sure what it is?The whole box is leather. There is no wood in it. It is 20 inches long, 10 inches wide and 8 inches tall. It is held together with metal brads. I bought it at an estate sale today. The lady who sold it was about 40 years old. She said that it had belonged to her great-grandfather. I just thought it was unusual and neat. The third picture is of the bottom. I believe that the loop in this photo probably had a leather strap going through it that buckled on the top to help keep the box closed. It has a sticker with a star on it on the top. I don't know if that's original or something a kid stuck on it at some point, but it appears to have been on it a long time. Anyone with any ideas of what it is or any info would be appreciated.
Interesting.
My dad had a box very similar that held surveying lenses but it had a clasp and hinges....so can't help sorry.
What you have is called a Telescope case. These were inexpensive cases used for various items (anything you wished to put in them) and they came in various sizes and coverings. It is hard to see from the pictures if it is a leather covered case, as it looks like fiber, but it could be. Yes, yours would of had a strap & buckle set-up to keep it closed. It is called a telescope case because you could make it larger by pulling it apart and then securing it with the strap.
I have several trunk catalog pictures on my site, and if I dont shoe the cases and you would like a picture, just email me. Go here to view the catalog pictures, and I will be adding more.

Thanks again, Jim. I really appreciate your expertise.
You're right. That's definitely what my case is. And you were right about it being fiber board, too. I thought that it was leather that had hardened with age but after closer inspection, it is fiber board. It is apparently covered with something that made it water proof. I appreciate you posting those catalog pages. I really enjoyed seeing the cases and better understanding what I bought.
