This is a vintage Skill Saw model J with toggle switch start. I recently found it when cleaning out my basement. I believe it is from 1928 and was the first run of model J (later runs had a trigger switch as I understand). I am very interested to know its value as I would like to sell to a collector. The lower blade guard is missing and the power cord has been repaired with old cloth electrical tape. It runs strong and has a significant amount of torque. Thanks for any additional information or value you could give.

I think you are predating this. To be sure contact their Hqs. in Europe and include a clear picture of the data plate. They can date it with the model and serial numbers. Bosch owns the Skil brand now and they aren't American made....China now. These old ones were true work horses. For some reason there isn't a database online to trace these. Several sites are building databases but last I knew it only goes back about 40 years.

My information about this saw comes from another thread on this website ( http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/7673-vintage-skilsaw#comment-558591 ) where a similar saw was identified
The serial number on the saw is 3816

That's the granddaddy of the Skil #77 worm drive-yes, lots a torque. I know that it has been the #1 choice for framing carpenters of both my and my father's generation. I've owned 2, they last forever. Your saw is both Beautiful AND Useful!

I still have one in the shed but I haven't used it for years.
