My daughter and I found this along side the road and scooped it up. My plan is to get it back to somewhat of its original state and use it as a beverage cooler for parties. The inside is in great condition, has a few bumps and scrapes along corners on outside. Someone painted it this hideous green color and I want to remove that color and restore to the original red with white lettering. It needs a new rubber thing around top and there was no lid or bottle cap catcher. I would like to get all of these too. First question is, how do I figure out the year it was made and how do I get the green paint off?

It's a 1938 cooler by Cavalier. Toolbox has a nice resource (maybe he'll stop by soon with some words of wisdom):

Also, a couple other resources tommy recommends:

You will probably need to remove ALL the paint to get off the green. It all depends on how much restoration you want to do.
Found along the side of the road?! I would drive by there again!!!!

I tried to get some of the green off with no luck. I figured I would have to strip down to the metal and prime and paint it. I saw that one website offered "official Coke Cola red" spray paint. It was pricey, but if that's what would be most authentic then I guess that's what I'll do. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm open for suggestions.
This was found outside my neighborhood in a semi county, very busy road. I'm not sure how it ended up there. Someone's junk is my treasure I guess.

Compare Rustoleum "Safety Red" to Coca Cola red. Tell me what you think!!
