I had this for 30+ years and still cannot find out anything about it. Hand painted on both sides with a cap and plastic applicator attached to a small piece of carved wood. No markings anywhere...bottom bottle has a small 3/4" x 1/8" indention.

      A Chinese snuff bottle?

      Google: "Chinese snuff bottle" koi
      Go to images.

Gosh that is close! Do the snuff bottles have the attached applicator inside? I couldn't find any that did.

Thank you for your help Vetraio50!

doodler54, there is usually a small spoon attached to the stopper for extracting the snuff. Here's the "Collectors Weekly" article on snuff bottles:
      http://www.collectorsweekly.com/bottles/snuff

Another CW article ""The Right Stuff: Decoding Chinese Snuff Bottles"

idcloisonne, you gave me a good laugh since you are most definitely overestimating my knowledge. I know nothing about snuff bottles, which is why I simply gave the links to some info.

doodler54, it's a lovely snuff bottle and sorry I can't add more info. I love seeing artistic depictions of koi (thanks, vetraio).

IDC, I loved reading your story, in particular because you helped the couple do their "due diligence" prior to sending to auction. ;-) Congratulations on a job well-done since that specific category is so very difficult. I will have to remember to check that fall auction.
