Chef Spices Berdan & Co. Toledo Match Holder

This is a very rare tin litho match holder for Berdan & Co. of Toledo Chef Brand Spices I purchased recently at auction. Berdan was a wholesale grocer here in Toledo from 1838 until about 1938. They also dealt is dry goods, cigars, coffee, teas and spices. Incorporated in 1917 as The Berdan Company (and later The Berdan Co.), this match holder would pre date their incorporation. There are many "Chef" brand Berdan items that can be found online, but they are somewhat scarce. There are other, less popular variations of Berdan's advertising, which also includes "Old Tavern" Brand and "John Drew" cigars.
