This is my great grandmother's trunk she brought from England when newly wed and immigrating in 1883. The stencil on the top is E White. The travel paper glued to the side says "London Brighton and South Coast Railway; London Bridge to Henfield. The trunk is 18"x 14"x 14".
Inside written on the wall paper lining is the message "This is Mary Jane White Francis trunk from England. Used to belong to her sister Ellen White. The writing was probably done by my grandmother who did that sort of thing. The newspaper in the bottom of the trunk is part of the Milwaukee Journal January 22, 1941. The top was locked and nailed down. I don't have the key. The top board is split. On the inside of the loose piece is written on the same wallpaper in the same handwriting, "Part of Grandma Mary Francis Trunk." This trunk has been in my parents' garage and now my garage for decades, probably since my grandmother died in the early 1970s. I haven't don't anything to it and am wondering now if I should clean it up with some Formby's Build-up Remover and then some Lemon Oil Treatment that I picked up at the local hardware store.
A great family piece -- also a very nice size for a living room side table.... a good cleaning will bring it to life...
Trunkman, Thanks for the confirmation.
