I haven't been saving them up - the postal service gods decided to have deliveries from three different countries all arrive the same day. This one was a domestic purchase, and I don't even want to say what a bargain it was, other than to say that I just basically paid for them to ship it to me. :)
This is a LARGE piece of glass - a full 10" in diameter. It was made by the factory as a lamp base - I'm sure of that. It looks to be an early electrical conversion to an oil lamp base. The hardware does look old, but other than the brass collar around the neck of the glass, may not be original. It does work perfectly, and the hardware is tight and secure. The wiring will need to be replaced (I don't trust splices that I didn't do myself), and it needs a shade. Those things are already in process - I will post additional photos once this project is done. It came with a "flickering flame" light bulb, which is kind of cool by itself. I'm going to add a frosted chimney type shade and green antique reproduction cloth-wrapped wiring. Then, I plan to put this beauty to work!
The shape of this vessel is very similar in size and shape to a marmoriertes (carneol) oil lamp base that I had previously in my collection, but sold some time ago. I feel that this is certainly an early piece - probably ca. 1899 or 1900 at the latest.

I like it a lot but everything about it is an enigma. Oil lamps I consider, is my specialty/expertise. The base & brass lower ring is from a 1880's-90's "banquet lamp", the collar & cord is from the 1920's, the font is definitely Bohemian, the gallery burner is newer but hard to identify from the photos and when the electrification occurred is unknown. Thanks, Bob - I was pretty sure it was a "Franken-lamp"... my interest in it is as art glass first, lamp second. As long as the final treatment looks good and functions safely, showing off the glass, the rest doesn't bother me much. It is good to know about the components, though.

I am drooling! It is gorgeous. Bob's modesty is only outdone by his knowledge. He is the go to guy for Oil Lamps. Franken lamp yes but it will look fabulous when you are finished with it. I am thrilled to hear that you do not trust wiring that has been cobbled together. One never ever ever ever should. There is nothing to loose by being careful and being sure. Unlike doing nothing and taking a flyer on work by an amateur you don't know. Great find, I know you will enjoy it.
