I've seen many fireplace surrounds, but the one I found is the only one I've encountered with tapered columns and curved/serpentine architectural details (lintel, fascia, mantel, pilasters...). The others I've seen are characterized by square corners and straight lines. Were the square/straight units more desirable at the time and/or was their a premium on selecting curved/serpentine components which resulted in fewer customers? Although it needs some sympathetic restoration at the base of the columns, I'm happy with the proportions and elegance of the piece. Now I need to build a theme room or locate a period house. lol

Very handsome Mantel. I purchased one in 1975, and hauled it around all these years. I never found the right fireplace for it. Several years ago, when I bought my cuurent home I put a upholstered panel into it and made it into a headboard. Easily reverseable and allows me to injoy it.
