S.A.R. Mme La Comtesse de Flandre et la Princess Marie-Louise d’Orléans. A charming postcard from the collection of Septimus and Clara Miller of Marie, comtesse de Flandre and one of her many grandchildren. On the net I have found quite a few portrait photos of the Comtesse with her grandchildren.

This is a photo of the Comtesse with her eldest grandchild the Princesse Marie Louise d'Orléans (1897-1973).

There is an American connection here too!

My last posting concerned Prince Philippe, Count of Flanders, second son of King Leopold I of Belgium. The Comtesse was his wife.

Royal families! The importance of an heir! But it many ways it also stresses the importance of an heir and a spare!

A case in point is the Belgian royal family where the Belgian King Leopold II had four children: a son and three daughters. His son died young at age nine. When Leopold II died the crown passed not to his daughters but to the son of his brother Philippe.

Philippe was in fact the ‘spare’ not the ‘heir’!

Thus the importance of the COMTESSE de FLANDRE. She was the mother of Albert I King of the Belgians from 1909 to 1934. She was the Queen Mother.

The Comtesse was born Marie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (Marie Luise Alexandrine Karoline on 17 November 1845. She was a daughter of Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, Prime minister of Prussia and Princess Josephine of Baden.

She married on 25 April 1867 in Berlin with Prince Philippe, Count of Flanders, second son of King Leopold I of Belgium and Louise-Marie of Orléans.

They had five children. Two boys and three girls. The last born became King. The eldest son Baudouin died at age 21.

So who is the pretty child in the photo?

Her name was Princesse Marie Louise d'Orléans (1897-1973) the daughter of the Comtesse’s eldest daughter. Her father was Emmanuel d'Orléans, Duke of Vendôme.

She married twice. Marie Louise's first marriage to Prince Philippe of Bourbon-Two Siciles ended in divorce in 1925. They had one son, Prince Gaetano, who was born in 1917.

Her second marriage was to Walter Kingsland who was born on 23 April 1888 at New York City, New York, U.S.A..

Walter Kingsland married Marie Louise d'Orléans, Princesse de France, daughter of Philippe Emmanuel Maximilien Marie Eudes d'Orléans, 8th Duc de Vendôme and Henriette Marie Charlotte Antoinette de Belgique, Princesse de Belgique, on 12 December 1928 at Chichester, Sussex, England. He died on 20 July 1961 at age 73.

Marie Louise died in New York.

Her effects went to auction at Drouot in 2013!
    Amazing!

There is even an Australian connection!
Marie Louise's grandson Gregory Peter de Bourbon married an Australian: Carrie Anne Thornley who was born in the country town of Cessnock, N.S.W..

Interesting they collected these cards - is it a bit of early times celebrity watching or were they historically interested in these royal personages?

      Awesome auction!

Many thanks KAREN, POPS 'n ANTIQUEROSE!

There's a bit of a story about the 'why', Karen. I have read on my researching a bit about Clara Miller's mother Mary Stewart Bell née Singer.

She claimed to be a very distant relation of Queen Victoria.

      http://bellarmstrong.kihlstrom.com.au/pages/james_bell.htm

      These people were very 'horsey'.
Septimus Miller had lots of contacts in that world.

So who was Walter Kingsland? Businessman? Marie Louis was doing a lot of running around Europe during WWI.
Assuming all super wealthy. Did they retain this during the two wars...become more wealthy?

Many thanks Amber, GEO 'n RADEGRUNDER.

I have had a look at some of the references to her and she lived well. Walter Kingsland is not that well documented.
