99% chance that this chest is from India. They still make them, new and also made to look old. These are more of a dowry chest than traveling trunk. I would say yours is not a reproduction, but rather original from mid to late 1800's? Some dealers ask quite a bit for these, but I am not sure how big the market is. I have to say I have seen many of these and most are fakes. Also, I have yet to see one as large as yours. Quite an impressive piece, but some condition issues.

Antiquerose the link you post is nothing like my trunk http://www.tradeindia.com/fp86848/Antique-Trunk.html... The hinges are way different the front and wheels nothing the same .. My trunk is wood and solid I mean solid ! Very very heavy there is metal or somthing in some places I can even see where someone was restoring it and replaced or fixed a few areas but who ever did that did it a very very long time ago. I also very much believe this is an original piece that was in pretty good to great shape for its age and they tried to restore and preserve it. I am on the hunt for someone to come and look at it in person. I am having a hard time finding anything in its size. I spoke with someone locally and sent pictures and they believe it to be an original piece but can't believe the size and weight. He is so excited to see it. I wish I could see one that's like it.

No problems. Each to their own. I am just having a real problems with it having so much age to it --- yet it does not show wear for this age in right spots. There should be wear on the U parts of the lock from being opened and closed for 200 years. Sorry that's just me.

All this decorated wear on it --- BUT no signs of real wear where things rubbed together, where people put their hands on it to open it to cause wear or on the top where the wheels rolled back and front when lid opened or move grooves from wear. Wheels on the bottom should show more wear from being rolled around by this heavy item. IMHO - Things do not add up. Sure it is impressive, but there has to be wear (real wear) from over the years. That is what I am saying.

EG: My dresser is only 50 years old (solid wood, but no comparison to your piece) and purchased new by my parents -- yet where I grab the drawer handles -- there is true wear there. Where is the Dust and dirt on it? Old wood chip marks should be a different color of wood - not the same color. The wood oxidization should be different, not all the same color. So I am just saying IMHO, where there should be wear (on metal, the wood of your piece) etc -- I see none........and to me, that is suspect

Just my opinion......... I am NOT a professional by any means.

You even hear in the news of real art dealers have been fooled into buying items that were not real things...or things at Auction that were not what they advertised. It happens! All I want you to understand is to take a Objective look at it. Real wear from years gone by should be there via being *handled* in places, or from use. I just do not see it.

I have some sterling Silver flatwear (with Provence from family plus archival info in many Museums on the family). These have the Lion Passant on them from 1752. The silverware was used, and you can clearly see wear on the handles. They have some dings and bangs etc too from over the years -- but there is wear from actual use on the scallop design of the flatwear where people had put their hands.

So just saying -- I am trying to be objective here. With antiques we can never have a closed mind. We have to look at everything. It can not just look old, it has to have wear related areas too. That is what I am saying. Maybe it's real, but IMHO - the fact there is not real wear in right places makes me wonder. That is all. No problems. Just an opinion here (mine) that's all.

Again -- just an Simple opinion. Still love it!!
