i was wondering if anyone has seen a trunk like this and might be able to tell me what period it is from or what it might have been used for. The dimensions are 54 " long x 27 " wide x 33' tall

hardware looks old, quite old. The box itself looks old, Looks like the pieces covering the wheels are newer additions. The wooden wheels, I cannot comment on these I have no knowledge in this area. There are several members who specialize in trunks and furniture that will be able to give you more info.

Apparently someone just imported a 40 FT container of these "antique" pitaras from India.

      Caveat emptor,

I'm sure when you just find one sitting in an antique shop, it is mesmerizing, especially if you never saw one before.
      But: http://lilanexports.com/all_product_images/48.jpg

It kinda kills the magic when you see them aging outback...

That's a great picture TA -- which is why I am so leery of any of these trunks because they are getting really good at it...

I hear you! Off topic, anything that I even think may be from China I assume to be a reproduction until it can be proven otherwise. Perhaps narrow-minded to some, I just like to be cautious. India is following China's lead.

I have nothing against imitation or reproduced antiques. I just wish they were permanently stamped as such. At least if someone wants to misrepresent a piece they would need to physically remove the part that says "reproduction". Sure, it's easy to do, but I like to think there would be some karma involved since there is no "misunderstanding" behind their intent.
