In the First World War (1914-1918) The Triple Alliance; Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy fought against Triple Entente; the United Kingdom, French and Russia.
In Germany and Austria, the people were called back again (as in 1804-1815 the war against Napoleon) to exchange their gold for iron.
For instance, this ring is of iron and originating from Austria. It says in the iron engraved: Pro Patria either: For the Motherland.
This ring is on the inside of gold and the outer surface of iron.
A beautiful piece of jewelery which also belongs again to the so-called Berlin Iron/Fer de Berlin jewelry.
