    This piece is a good news/bad news story. The good news is that I get to document this really nice shaped Creta Rusticana covered jar. Rusticana is an older decor, ca. 1900, and as far as I can tell, the shape has not been published (yet) in the books of paper patterns. Looking through my collection, I realized that over the years I had sold all of my Rusticanas, and I was delighted to find one in an unusual shape that would be a good singular example to have.

    The bad news is that I don't have the heart to show you the other side of this piece - it was damaged in shipping. Note to sellers - if you have a glass jar with a lid, wrap the lid and the jar separately, and put them in the box separately. This seller wrapped the lid in bubble wrap, but then inverted it and placed it, top first, inside the vase before wrapping all of it up in bubble wrap. The pressure alone was probably enough to cause the resulting cracks, which resulted in a 1" square piece breaking off on the shoulder on the other side of the jar. I would also suggest to anyone selling glass that double boxing should be the standard, and the obvious - make sure the box is marked fragile.

    So sadly, this piece will be either going back to the seller, or sitting on my shelf with a huge crack on the reverse. But at least I got to document it - I've never seen another one like it.

      Nice unusual example of Rusticana! Warren I had a shipper (UPS store no less) ship me what was a fantastic signed Moser lidded box and they plastic wrapped the lid to the box. When it arrived and I removed it from the box, I could hear it cracking, very sad a "professional" shipper would do this.

      Oh Warren, I am so sorry. I was watching this piece - it is an amazing shape, and so sad to hear it was damaged. Your pictures are great though, so at least, as you said, it is documented well.

      Warren, I watched this one too and almost bought it for the same reasons that you did. It is such an unusual example of Rusticana. It really was a special piece. I am sick to hear that after 120 years of good care that it is now broken because one seller knew nothing about shipping glass. I am so sorry. While you may hate to look at a broken piece of glass, if the seller would let you keep it you certainly would be a better steward of this piece from here on out!

      Hi Warren double boxing is not always the answer . I recently had 2 very big kralik flowers from an epergne shipped to me from France I stipulated good packing and paid extra for it . they just put one thin layer of bubble wrap and no padding in first box and the extra big second box had no packing at all so they just rattled around in box with in box . of course totally smashed to pieces ..

      I prefer polystyrne boxes which do not crush like card board . I cut to size . and plenty of foam padding all round..

      Thanks, Deb, and I agree - if the seller doesn't ask me to send it back, I'll put it in the "infirmary" - a cabinet section for damaged pieces. :)

      I think we all have suffered a loss like yours on pieces that we anxiously await their arrival only to feel that awful let down that someone did not care for the piece as they should. Your "infirmary" is a wonderful idea. The piece is beautiful!

      What a tragedy for such a unique piece of glass. We've probably all been there, and it is especially sad when it happens to a piece of glass. Pottery can be fixed, unfortunately not glass. You didn't say if this was shipped by the Post Office, but if so, you can file a claim with them online and still keep the piece. Doesn't work if you file the claim in person. I've had to do this twice in the past month, but it was easy and payment was pretty quick. Only thing they don't refund is the postage. I got a nice piece of glass with a small piece of threading off for the price of the shipping.

      beautiful piece and it's a pity that seller did not do what he was supposed to. I don't know why but sometimes even sellers with years of experience make dumbest mistakes. I started to give specific packing instructions when I buy more than one piece of glass at the same time from one seller.

      I always tell the seller to "pack it well" or it will come right back to them.

      Unfortunately "pack it well" means different things to different folks.

      As a prior victim of poor packing (several times), I try to follow macart's advice and give specific instructions on how to pack. Some sellers take it as an insult, but it usually results in the item arriving undamaged.
