This flag was was brought back by the same U.S. soldier that brought back the officer sword. It was a battlefield pickup from the island of Okinawa. Flags like this were carried by many Japanese soldiers for good luck, folded up in their helmet or packs. They were also tied to their rifles and carried into battle. Often, as in this case, these flags are found with battle damage and blood on them, for the Japanese soldiers rarely surrendered. They were signed by family members and friends, and patriotic slogans were often added. The bold kanji on the top of the flag translates to "I pray your military fortunes are long lasting". No two flags will be alike.

My grandfather brought back one of these. It's hanging in his basement.
