Spring loaded is it a magicians hat ?
Either Magican hat or a dancer's prop .

German and Austrian Patent
With imperial eagle and Kaisekrone inside
Size: about 58.5 cm circumference
Height: about 15 cm
Length: about 31.5 cm
Consistently deep black. The pictures a bit deceiving.
Inside the seam partially loose.
Up on the surface, a pressure point. Edges bumped and with a little wear.
With "defective" box
Just got some info, could be a mans opera top hat,???
That was what I meant when I said a Dancers prop when they danced with a cane also :-)
In french they are called "chapeau claque" or Gibus.
Antoine Gibus was the first to patent the system in Paris in 1834.
First appears in London 1824.
Was used in travel, or receptions or attending spectacles as folded you can hold it under the arm.
Nice one!
Hi thanks for that information, yes two hinges inside the hat
Very nice indeed!! I have a couple of top hats, but none like this. Great find!!
