Purchased this steamer trunk yesterday. The hardware is patented from March 16, 1880 from what I have researched. The metal looks to have been a dark green color...not sure if this was original as I don't know much about these items. I would like some info on the best way to restore or advice to leave as is. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!

Hello. Your trunk is a crystallized metal covered, barrel top, cross slat trunk. The interior has a fall in top. The latches are from the July 9 1872 CA Taylor patent, but the trunk is much newer, closer to 1885-1890. The slat clamps are from the Mar. 16 1880 patent also by CA Taylor. The crystallized metal is actually Zinc coated iron (which gives it the effect) that is coated with a colored varnish. Your trunk was Gold in color. You can get more geberal information on my site at,

Thank you so much for the information! Is there any way to get the green off of the gold paint or should it be left alone?
