I have been interested in these for many years. I have seen many of these hanging on the wall in houses of friends & family when I was growing up. But whenever I tried to get a better look, I was always told, "Look but don't touch!". For me as a kid, the only idea I had about this was that it might be a banjo without strings. When I decided to obtain one for my very self. The only ones I found were either decorative, and not well made. The colonial style brass bed warmers didn't impress me much either. When I found this patinated copper & brass beauty for $5. I scooped it up quick. It measures 10" copper pan and the wood handle is 36". I Über dig it! =^D
Thank you aghcollect! =)
Thank you pops52! =)
"Look but dont touch" I heard this too when little girl ;)
Love this post tom, its an amazing piece, so warm for winter times!
lol a banjo with no strings! I can see that! :)
...and I love this comparison" like a banjo without strings", agree with you tom! ;)
You are right about a lot of wall hangers. I remember back when I was growing up (I failed that!) in the '50's & '60's, there were a lot of wall hangers (repros) of these. My guess is a "repop". Main give-away to me is the inside colouration. You just can't get the discolouration out of copper from disproportionate heat, from such as coals without serious sanding etc. & unlikely even then. My opinion is that this is an early, well made repop & a great wall hanger. This was not just "thrown together" & is extremely well made from the pics. I wouldn't mind having it hanging on my wall! For $5, I would say you got a really great deal! The copper is maybe worth that much.
Many many thanks Virginia.vintage! =^)

Yes, really blunderbuss2, Im not lie, I never in my life see someone like this, belive me.
I know others types of bed warmers like hot water bottles made of ruber or more antiques like a ceramic bottles "porrones".

I was thinking, oh cant be hot water, lol!!!
Muchas pero muchas gracias pop52! :)
You're very welcome Virginia!
Graciassss pop52! ;)
Afraid there isn't much use for a bed warmer where I live, but wouldn't mind having one to hang on the wall just to get questions from friends. Would luv to have a pair of snow shoes to (Could tell locals they are sand shoes). I feel embarrassed for winter tourists who bring local papers from up "There" showing snow covering cars etc. & telling locals, "You don't want to be there" etc.. The locals look at the pics & think the snow is sand.
Another thing about this "bed warmer" I noticed. All the old ones I've seen are very smooth on the top so that they don't catch on the sheets. This has hinges & "things" that would keep it from "gliding" smoothly.
You right blunderbuss, can understand.
Of course, when differents cultures interchange is when thinks like this happen and I think its good.
For example I never in my life see the snow, we havent in my country :(
Winters here are strongs, maybe -6 ºc but its a dry cold without snow.
We use bed warmers too, when I was a little girl I remember my grandfather with a Ginebra bottle very antique telling: ohhh this night this will warming up but not drinking, you will see...and he filled the strong bottle with hot water to later put it into the bed! His feet so happy! ;)
Also a hot brick too, covered with newspaper pages!! And of course, the rubber hot water bottle. Across the times and ages all people with the same necessities.
Thanks so much for your words blunderbuss2!!! ;)
You are below 30S & I'm at 18N so you get a bit colder there.
Id, they usually get me to do it & then follow (or dragged in). Have had a few jump out the other side when I get in, so installed a guard rail with razor wire on top.
Oh my. What I miss? =^'
Worse bb2, Glennfiddich
