Any ideas, it marked 15ct on the back. I don't know anything about this type of jewellery. I think it's antique. Thanks

      Lovely! Aesthetic Movement?

Hi Jean, me again. You have a lovely bit of Victorian Ascetic Movement here. The heron is a common theme. It looks like some rose gold overlay on the flower & butterfly. How big is it? Most commonly, you'll find them in silver & in brooch form but I can't tell what your's originally was. If small, possibly an earring?

Hi again, the size is approx 1.25 it was a brooch, there was no pin when I brought it so I converted it in to a pendant.

Do you want me to take a photo of the back?

Hi Jean. That makes sense. I've seen a few victorian brooches converted to pendants recently. They look good, like yours!

I've tried to photograph the back. You can see at one time it was a brooch. At the top there is a triangle with 15 ct within it. This topic is so interesting. I have other things to put on this site later. The one thing I'm really interested in, is the filagee silver bracelet, I have put it on this site, it is so beautiful, it's worth nothing, but it did start me on the path to antique jewellery, it's a special piece for me

Hi Jean, this looks like it might have held a locket closure in the back.

Interesting. It's not very heavy, how did they do the engravings and the Heron, and Butterflies stands out, plus the flower.

No, this is not a mourning style. There was a very perscribed dress code for mourning during this period including jewellery.

Lots of Victorian brooches had a photo or hair locket on the reverse. Hair is not always mourning. It can symbolise romantic love, family love or just used as a material to make jewellery from. You could buy booklet instructions on how to weave your own hair jewellery at home which lots of Victorian women did as a past time.

Anyway, it looks like it has a lip on the reverse to hold something in, it may have originally supported a locket frame. Like this one (which is also a brooch converted to a pendant) - http://www.rubylane.com/item/730716-RL000951/Unusual-Antique-Victorian-Amethyst-Set-Silver

They overlay with gold to get the 3D look & feel. It's an imitation of the original Japanese mixed metal work jewellery that was available at the time. Most commonly you see silver overlaid with yellow, rose & sometimes a green tinted gold or gold leaf.

Once the Samuri were disbanded in Japan, their sword smiths started making jewellery for the English market, it is very fine overlay work called shakudo. This is the English copy. I have a good piece of shakudo, two frogs carrying a third in a divan chair.

I see what you mean by being a locket, I looked at the website. It would be nice to put it back to its a original use. I do also think it was a brooch. I'm going to put another photo from the side
Fascinating the history of shakuda jewellery. At least it kept the sword smiths in work.

I've added some photos after its makeover. My friend decided to give it a modern look with the Labradorite stone, while keeping the Victorian escetic original look. So it's now antique and modern. I wonder what your thoughts are, I would be interested to know.
