I have no idea of the history of this item as I bought it in a charity shop recently but it's a beautiful vase. Because it depicts a stork (?) I suspect it's Japanese. The images on the vase (storks and flowers) are shiny ceramic and deeply (and expertly) cut into the medium but the pale blue background is matt finish and rough to the touch with (what appear to be) tiny pieces of stone embedded in it.
It's not 'quite' symmetrical around the lip at the top of the vase and the decoration around the bottom looks to be hand painted, so it's been rudely made I think. There is just one mark cut into the bottom of the vase (see picture) bearing in mind, the mark may not be showing the right way up, or the right way round.
It stands at 12½" tall and the belly has an 8" diameter approximately.
This is a stunning vase and I really love it. It seems to be quite old and it would make my day if anybody could tell me anything about it. (I am not into pottery so I have absolutely no knowledge to fall back on.)
I'd especially like to know if it IS Japanese? is the bird that's depicted, a stork? and what is the name (if there is one) of the 'rough' part of the vase? Thanks for reading this :-)
