I picked this up from Volunteers of America this afternoon. I remember my Dad working on this exact same model in his basement workshop in the 60's. I was hoping it was from the 60's but it's not. The bar code says copyright 1988. The box is a bit battered and warped from moisture but all the pieces seem to be there. I couldn't check it at the store because it was taped shut with very old tape. It does look like it was returned to the hobby shop after a partial attempt to put it together. One of the parts bags was torn open an some parts detached from their trees. Directions, net rigging, molded sails, decals and a bag of thread and anchor chain, are all still there. It does say "Special price" on the box since it was an open and returned item. The original 1988 price was $39.95. Don't know what store it came from. The sticker just says CW/CP and some numbers. I showed it to my Dad and asked him if this looked familiar. He said "I built one of those, but I don't remember what happened to it." I think he gave it to my uncle to finish because he liked it so much. -Mike-

Thermopylae still has the record for the fastest trip by sail to Melbourne from China - 63 days, according to Wikipedia.
She certainly reads like a fantastic ship!

I love those old Revell ship models. I had the Cutty Sark. Unfortunatly the shelf it was on fell down. Twice.
I've always wanted to do their USS Constitution model.

Do you have the scale correct? According to Revell these are 1/96 scale
1960 Kit# H-390 / 1980 Kit# 5610 / 1988 Kit# 5622 - which is what you have. Only the box art changed for the three kits, everything else was the same.

Thank you for the "loves" everyone :) Hi aghcollect....... I looked at the end of the box and double checked the details panel. Yep, it says 1:70 scale. I took a pic of the panel and replaced picture 4. Should have done that last night the first time around. I built a lot of ship models in high school. Pretty much covered everything from the Santa Maria to the Bismarck, but sailing ships were always my favorite. They are all long gone though. My brother and I were fighting one day and he threw a pillow at me. It missed and hit all my models on the dresser and obliterated them ! I never cried so hard in my life ! We both got in trouble for fighting but my dad took me to the store for a couple new models. The only model I have left is my 3 foot "Titanic" Which I built in the 80's right after Ballard discovered the wreck. I've always been a nut about anything "Titanic" even before the discovery. -Mike-

Well that was ages ago Ken .... I used to but mostly ships and a few cars. Airplanes are my uncles forte. He's my mom's younger brother and we're less than two years apart in age ( he's the older one...lol). He builds models professionally and they are amazing. Dioramas the whole nine yards. He posts his work on Facebook. Ships in the water that look real and crashing through waves. WW I and II planes and figures. He actually begged me to send him this model. He's been looking for it forever, since seeing my dad working on one like it. Says that's what started him in his model building career. What to do.....:)

Looks like this is going to my uncle in Florida. He told me that the 1:70 scale on the box is a misprint and 1:96 scale is correct.
