This item has been in my family for a long time. The history from my grandmother is that it was a Middle Eastern Prince's baby toy or a rattle. It is said to be ivory. Can anyone help to identify it.

Thanks walksoftly. They have differences, but I'm not good enough to tell which type it is. Do you have any ideas?

That makes and interesting read, walksoftly. On third perusal, I get either Narwhale or Hippo. It certainly could be a tooth rather than a tusk.

I'm not sure that it's any of them, but to hard to tell from your pictures.
There appear to be too many lines & deep grooves in the outside.
If it is of middle eastern origin I think we can rule out Narwhal. :-)
Ya never know about those deserts. Cyclone flew it there?:)

I just posted another photo. It may be time to get a close-up lense for the camera. It appears to be some writing. Not sure.

Hey walksoftly and all. It is possible that the piece is from Russia, since my grandmother was from Riga, Latvia. This could explain the seafaring nature of some of the tooth animals. Just brainstorming.

Take you photo's from a little further away so that they are in focus, then crop them down.
I just replace 3 of the photos with clearer and higher resolution ones that you can focus in on. I hope this helps.

I never did Ivory but I have carved antler. Looks quite similar to fallow deer antler.
