This is a large, solid wood piece of furniture that has been in my family for over 35 years. My parents bought it from hospital surplus back in the 1970's, so we think it was from the hospital or the convent connected to the hospital.
It is 50" high, 42" wide, and 24" deep. There are three drawers. Unfortunately, it has been painted.
Does anyone know what this is? What it was originally used for?
I am not sure what you are looking for with your questions. What does anyone use a dresser for? The use should be fairly obvious.
Thanks for your reply. I have been using it to store out of season clothes, but wondered if originally it was for storing blankets or linens.
This isn't terribly old and may have been used to store anything. The deep drawers don't really tell the story so it may have been used for sheets or blankets. The secondary wood is pine or spruce of a really low grade. The dovetails are machine cut and the drawer pulls are machine punched. If you decide to refinish it pull off a drawer pull and see if the back is stamped or embossed. Normally they will have a mark or at least a Pat # on the inside.
Believe it or not I have sold pulls that were marked for more than the item they were attached to was worth as a whole. I doubt you fall into that category because these look more modern and mass produced.
