I bought this at a shop and it has real horse hair for the seat and springs.
It has the mushroom arm rest and the cloth is designed with buggy and horse, old train, old buildings and trees. You can tell it was hand stitched. I would love to know more about this chair if anyone can help me. I know the wood is Maple. Thank you.
this is a beautiful tiger maple chair! it reminds me of ones i've seen in Quebec. although it is in an early style, and it looks like it has some age - maybe late 1800s, but it doesn't look to be 1600s or 1700s. There just doesn't seem to be the wear and patina you'd see on an older piece. Sometimes country pieces were made in a much older style, as they were copies of pieces that were readily available.
ho2 you give it a older date have I would have I am thinking much newer and doubt it is stuffed with horse hair . The fabric looks 1960-70s .
What ever it was stuffed with it has turned into bright yellow dust. when you tip it to the side it runs out. Any information is welcome. Thank you for all your comments. The reason I said 16 or 1700,s is because it I could not find any earlier with the Mushroom handles or stile. I was told it was real horse hair at the antique shop.
ho2cultcha, Thank you very much The seat is very wide I just have not seen anything like it and I am learning.
Believing an antique shop salesman is like dealing with a used car dealer. You better know more than he does and take what he says with a grain of salt unless he can qualify his statement. You are obviously really new at collecting and just need to spend more time learning.
Horse hair does not turn yellow and to dust . It was likely stuffed with sometype of early foam which has dried out . I always tell people buy what you love and can use or enjoy . There are as fhr many antique dealers that are guessing at what they have and or not reputable . One thing I know for sure I did run a antique shop and no dealer can know what everything is , just like on here each has a area they have extensive knowledge in and some knowledge in other area's but we turn to several people on site each brings a special expertise . The chair is nice to sit on hopefully but if it is losing stuffing you may just use some fabric glue on spot it is leaking from . We did get of track on your post but we also do enjoy each other and do chat a bit :-) It takes a team of people for this site to work and do come back with posts and take time to look at furniture section on site . All the best !
oh and you might look under ladder back chairs in your search :-)
Thank you very much.
Hope we helped a bit csharp and your welcome :-)
You Have and you are right there is no horse hair. I will post the bottom.
