I found these vases recently at an estate sale. They are neat and apparently there is some interest in these pieces. I had no idea but bought them because they were pretty. I want to learn more about them. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks for posting these FoV.
As you possibly read in my Oread post these are Japanese glass possibly made by Yamaguchi (not confirmed) as Oread was a distributor of glass, not a producer.
Glass like this is hand made essentially. The base has been blown into a mould and then the glass has been hot worked to finish it. That is why there is variation in the two vases. A glass blower has used tools to "pull" and "push" the glass to make that nice ruffle top.
I think these are a 60s production. I really like these cool blues!
How neat is that? I had no idea the might be from the 60s! You know I got them at a recent estate sale... I paid either $1 or $2 for both! When you say they may be made by Yamaguchi are you talking these folks? http://www.yamaguchi-glass.com/English%20Top.html I have a lot to learn.. this was all I could find so far.
Yes that is the same company but they don't do much "art" glass today.
Japanese glass is little known in the West even though lots was exported in the 60s and 70s. I have spent lots of time trying to find out about factories and history but it us a murky area, particularly as I can't read Japanese.
I have not even confirmed Yamaguchi made these - it is an assumption only on my part based on the base and finish of these pieces.
Enjoy your bargains!!
Thank you for your information and hard work. It is clear that you have spent time on researching this company. I did see some of their glass. These pieces also look a little like some of the pulled Czech glass but not exactly. What do you think? I haven't found any other vases like ours. Have you? I am posting some more of the treasures I have found. Most at deep discounts because I hate paying retail! Should have made my name Cheapskate! lol
I see you have a large collection and I will be nosing around to see your finds too.
Thanks and looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.
BTW my son is called Vincent ! :)
I am glad to share. I love this group! When you posted on another piece of mine that you used vegemite, only then did I realize you were in Australia. How neat! My mom has always wanted to visit there. I think it would be great fun. Anyway, I love the name Vincent. I am a little bit of an artist and my favorite painter is Vincent Van Gogh... so that is where my user name comes from. It is good that you named your son Vincent. :)
