Just bought 4 of these side chairs and would LOVE to know if anyone knows what they are! I just really liked them and they're not big and bulky which is what I needed for the area where I want to use them! Any info anyone?

      Press back with beehive finials.

The pictures don't expand so that makes it more difficult. The older looking one appears to be a single pass press which makes a difference if you go to date the chairs.

fhrjr2: When you say "pictures don't expand" do you mean that they don't get bigger when you click on them? (not to sound ignorant but because when I click on them they open larger in a new window so I just wondered) All 4 chairs are alike except that someone "refinished" 2 of them. Wish they had left them alone, I like the "older" looking ones much better! I'll post a couple more pics with more detail!
walksoftly: Pressed back with beehive finials is exactly what I was calling them, now if I could just learn something about them! (like time period, where they may have been made. etc)
      Thanks so far!!!

      The images are only 640 x 640.
Post a picture of the bottom as well.

Yes I was referring to the fact that the pictures do not enlarge. Doesn't really matter but normally they do. You can research them quite easily. They are pressed back (not hand carved) and spindle cut.

Posted a few more. The underside pic is of one of the un-refinished chairs. I'm thinking someone put a wedge into the one leg to "tighten things up" perhaps??? I've tried searching pressed back side chairs, pressed back side chair with beehive finial, and several other ways as well but haven't found them as yet! Does the construction help date them at all for either of you?
(I really am new at this so forgive my ignorance)

These chairs would have been mass produced & possibly sold through a mail order company, so finding more info could be impossible!

Would you venture a guess as to when they may have been made? And I by no means mean an exact date but perhaps just early, mid, late 1800's, 1900's...pretty sure they aren't from THIS century!!! I just really don't have any idea...

      As for age 1900-1930's.
Perhaps fhrjr2 can narrow it down
      Here's some reading for you.

If you research through the very early Sears catalogs you will probably find these. Many were mass produced in Grand Rapids and shipped all over the place. They originally sold for anywhere from $2. 50 to $12.00. Spindle cutters and presses streamlined construction and mass production began. The wedge is pretty common. When the back got wobbly driving a wedge as shown would tighten the joint. Quite similar to how a wedge holds the head on a wooden handle hammer.
