I picked up this trunk at a garage sale for 10 dollars. I'm interested in refinishing it. I would like to know about what year it was made in and who it was made by. I tried to research but have come up empty handed. I finally found a picture of a trunk that it matches... Is this trunk rare?

You have an early 1900's flat-top trunk. Without a label it would be hard to know who made it as many companies made this model/style of trunk. It is not a rare trunk.... but it will look nice refinished. Good luck with you project and welcome to Collectors's Weekly!!

I have been told that sometimes the date this was made can be found under the paper inside the trunk. Is this true trunkman? Nice trunk hickadilly1. I agree it will look nice when restored.

I have never found a manufacture date under any paper on any trunk. Even when they have a label there is usually no date on the label. It just was not an important consideration at the time. Dates were important when linked to a patent. If any one else has had a different experience I would like to hear from you!!!

I agree with trunk man I have never found a date under the paper. I have found single numbers though, a 2 and a 3 on separate(American pine) trunks. I believe this to possibly be the model of what type that they were to build as it moved down the line or the numbered side of the box.It could also be grade numbers from the lumber yard as to the quality of the pine boards that were used.I am not sure of any of these and it is only speculation. I did find the initials C. A. in script under the destroyed canvas on a french trunk(Poplar wood), that was on a Jules laQuerb'e trunk ,Maison- Charles Burrilion. Possibly some Malletier took pride enough to initial their work. again hard to know.
