I found this brass snuff box in southern France. It has belt "loops" on the back and seems to have been hand carved. But when? by whom? in what country? intended for use by whom? The box portion measures 1.5" x 1.25" by 1". Weighs 4.4oz or 125 grams. Does anyone have information or ideas to share with me? Thanks so much. J

Good point. If I carry it on my belt (and it cannot easily be removed), then I need to be able to get whatever is carried in it by dipping or pinching. I cannot easily get two-fingers inside to pinch something. But one finger works. Tipping, in order to pour something out, would be difficult if it is on my belt.

Palaska is Hungarian-Turkish word for a cartridge-belt or gunpowder box.

Does the style and carving on this box look Hungarian-Turkish to you? Thanks.

Yes. And if you would combine the following words in a Google search, you would see others: palaska, Ottoman cartridge box you will see others.

Thanks so much--it is so surprising what I learn from the odd items I find!
