I have been going through a bit of dry spell when it comes to acquiring glass. The loss of my partner of 32 years over the winter took me out the game for a while. I am beginning to come around and my hope for is to become more engaged. I have found a few pieces lately – this being one of them.

Here is a Kralik, early 1900’s Cornucopia Vase - Amethyst Frit on a Gold base, 8” high. In the background is one I have had in my collection for awhile now. I like this shape.

Research shows that Kralik did a variety of these shapes in a variety sizes and decors. Although I haven’t been able to find a name for this décor it is similar to Kralik’s Overshot - the glass base is gold with a textured (Amethyst Frit) surface and there is an applied green base. This shape is referred to as Cornucopia - meaning horn of plenty. The Cornucopia is a stylized goat’s horn usually shown overflowing with fruit, flowers and grain. According to Greek Mythology, it is the horn of the goat that suckled Zeus, which broke off and became filled with fruit. In folklore, it became full of whatever its owner desired.
