This has me stumped...it is a wooden, but copper-lined box (see photos), with wooden wings (?). Dimensions are: 21 1/2" W x 13" D x 25" H. Decoration on front looks Oriental. It is old. Can anyone tell me what it is, its age and where it is from? Thanks

Tobacco stand, humidor. You keep your pipes on top, tobacco stays moist, yet mold and insect free (copper has a germicidal effect).

Interesting that someone would line the interior with metal and use cheap board panel for the inside of the door.

Well if you would look closely, you can see that the hinges are replacements. It is possible that the liner was also removed.

Obviously someone chopped this. None the less they found a buyer who was unaware. Both the value and the age were taken away. An item it only as old as the newest part. Buyer beware.

      fhr, you can get brutal.
    7. fhrjr2 fhrjr2, 10 years ago
Brutally honest. Everyone thinks they have a gold mine and that is fine. Call it what it is so they are aware of it. If they then decide to make a false representation when they sell it, that is up to them. We all get burned now and then. All that glitters isn't gold.

I am sure you and many others here have your opinion of me and that is your right, but it won't change anything. Call a spade a spade and get it out in the open. This item has value but the value is in parts only to a restorer. Being outspoken and blunt isn't something you are born with or inherit. You have to work hard at being and A** to get the title. I have earned it the hard way.

LOL fhr! You have more points than a porcupine. When I said brutal, it was more as a sarcastic remark as I'm sure you have been around long enough to witness me "drum out" more than 2 BS posters. He might not really know. Better than Tupperware collections! Still can't believe that happened!! Compared to getting brutal, you are still at 101 level compared to me. LOL. 102 class starts Sept. 1st. LMAO!!

I am like a duck....it rolls off my back. I am totally amazed people buy an item and then say "What is it". DUH!!

You're alright fhr, I don't care what everybody says I don't listen to the cops anyway. LOL

You don't worry about the cops here. Every day they arrest them for molesting kids, DUI, domestic violence, bribes etc. etc. I have a big dog, a big gun and a bad attitude. Bring it on. We live on the safe side of town.

Poco poco fhr. (That's "easy, easy" in popiament). LUV it! I taught the Kraut girl I live with, how to shoot. What was I thinking?? Guns in the hands of Germans!! Now if there is trouble, I have to get the magazine from its hiding place & put it my Browning before I can do anything. Things were so much simpler with my "drop-down" gun system. Have anything good to trade for the Kraut? (only moderately used by me at my age). Can send pics to your email address only as they wouldn't accept on CW. (Tried that once). LOL. This is not a joke! She might improve your sense of humour but don't leave anything that could be used as a weapon within her reach in the mornings!

Sometimes there is an Ora to these things. I do not know how many times I thought "What is it?" but I wanted it and sometimes purchased it anyway.

I thought it was a cooler or refrigerator at first. I also like the idea that it might be a humidor. I will keep my eye out for one of these if it is a humidor.

Thanks to all, even fhrjr2. I had no idea what it was and I am helping a friend with an estate sale and this was in her mother's house. Could anyone, even fhrjr2, give me an idea what to ask for it???

Those racks on the sides look like they are for magazines, so maybe it is a side table of some sort?

The prices are all over the place. Apparently, it is called a "Smoking Stand" and tobacco was kept inside. The few that I recently read about were for pipe tobacco, but I guess you could put cigars in it. Some comments said it has about $3-$6 worth of copper in it. Looking at your unit (from a consumer point of view), with the fibrous backed door, hinges, and no humidistat, I'd say $10 to $30. Good luck
