I own a Murano glass vase signed by Cenedese. I have done extensive research on Cenedese and have found that he had started the art of glass making at the age of nine and opened his business in the year of 1946. My peice has the signature of Cenedese with the date of 1942. I have looked at many Cenedese peices but all after the year of 1946. It is a very stunning peice but I cannot seem to find any information on this vase. Can anyone tell me anything about his peices before the year of 1946?

Hello, this vase is made with a sommerso glass of clear, read, and Uranium (or Vaseline glass) layers. It will glow under ultraviolet light. Gino Cenedede one of the founders (along with Alfredo Barbini) belonged to a family of ancient roots from Murano. Cenedese was formed in 1946 was NOT formed in 1942, it was formed in 1946, so that is probably why yuou are finding dificulty finding info before that year.
It was probably made by Antonio DA Ros who took over Cenendese in 1959 as Art Director. Alfredo Barbini has a very distinct style, and though he practlicly invented the "Sommerso" technique (which means "Submerged" in Italian) I feel this is definitly not of his hand (actualy Murano artists worked as a team) but has the more modernist aproach that Da Ros is famouse for. I can't tell how tall it is but in todays market it should be worth between $300-$350. Check ebay as it is your best sourse for what stuff is selling for, not fictional values placed on things by self proclaimed "experts".

http://www.glassmessages.com DO NOT give valuations, that would be a silly thing to do, in the current finacial climate valuations are worthless, it could be worth $350 OR $1000 who knows, certainly not a self proclaimed expert.
p.s the sommerso technique was perfected by Carlo Scarpa for Vennini in the 1930's

Just a note to add that the second layer of glass looks like amber to me, not uranium yellow, and will therefore not glow under UV light.

I inherited a set of geese, a blue teddy bear, a blue bud vase and a flat vase of Murano Glass. Where in the Phoenix AZ area can I take them to find out if they are worth as much as I have been told?

I have a salt and pepper set that is suppose to be made out of real elephant tusks. They are originally from India in 1969-1970. Where in the Phoenix area can I find information about them?

Hi. I have just noticed the vase and the mention of 1942. Have you seen how the French, Italians and other Europeans have a 7 with a stroke across the middle?
It may well be that the number is 1972. Just a thought bubble.
    8. austrohungaro austrohungaro, 13 years ago
That could be it, vetraio :) We also use these kind of 7 in Spain

Hi austrohungaro! It's to do with how we are taught to write our numbers. The digit 1 is not just a down stroke in Europe as it is in English schooling. It's two strokes: an up and then a down stroke. Difficult to explain in words. A seven in English schooling has a horizontal stroke at the top of a 1 : 7. Whereas in Europe the stoke is a third stroke across the middle of the 1.
      Claro? o no?
