I'm not sure what this is. I assume it is an unfinished rug. Whatever it is they did a very nice job on it. It measures 2 feet wide but the stitched part is about 17 inches wide. the overall length is about 5 feet 6 inches and the stitched part is about 5 feet 2 inches. the reason it is darker on the bottom is because of the lighting, because of the length I couldn't get evenly lit.
If someone can give me some kind of information on this piece I would very much appreciate it. Thanks

This is beautiful, the hours that has gone into this, I wouldn't like guess. To me it looks like a tapestry, needlework, embroidery. I do a little myself, but nothing on this scale. I have to admire the skill and workmanship. The colours, everything about it I love.

Thanks for the comment Peasejeam55. You're probably right about it being an embroidery. I should have taken a picture of the reverse side then you would probably have known for sure. You can't really see it clearly enough in these pictures to make an absolute determination. Thanks again.

Just go to press edit than go up to your photos, there you can remove. Remember I'm not a expert, I just love this. It will have wait until tomorrow, I'm in Europe and it's nearly 2.30 in the morning. Goodnight.

After having some sleep and looking again this, I think it could be tapestry. Basically very similar. May be, look on some web sites (Wikipedia) do some research. I'm wondering if it was group that made it, as to do something like this, the size the detail would have been a life times work. I look at it again and it more beautiful, lucky you.

      Peasejean55,
I'll do some research today to try to make the determination if it is a tapestry or embroidery or whatever. It is very uniform on its finished side which makes me think that one person made it. If they made tapestries for a living working 8 hours a day then it could be done in a few months. I am just throwing ideas out there. I really have no idea.

This was in my late Mother's collection of antique and collectible fabrics. Do you have any idea how old it could be? I am thinking of mounting it, but if it is an antique, then mounting it may take away from its value. Maybe I'll dig around to try to find one of my Mother's old books on the subject.

      Thanks again for your help.

It's interesting why it has number 1 at the bottom of the right hand side. May be there are other panels. In my opinion this has been stretched so it must have been on a frame. Whether it was a large frame or they moved a smaller frame along as they finished sections of the work. You need a frame to keep the tension and it's easier to work. I wish I could tell you more.

I don't know if it's antique. There are I'm sure special ways to display this piece. I know I would have show it off. Good luck on your research.

I would love to know how your research goes.

      Peasejean55,
I am looking into it right now, and so far I think that you were originally correct when you said it is an embroidery.

If I find out more I'll let you know. Thanks

      Beautiful!
It could be a panel for a folding screen?
    22. Vrgdc Vrgdc, 10 years ago
Thanks kyratango. It's about the right size, so it is a good possibility.

It is gorgeous! This is a needlepoint tapestry, not an embroidery. You can tell from the canvas. The design portion has been needlepointed but the background still needs to be done. So, the canvas is incomplete.
      Hope this is helpful.
    24. Letsgomom, 10 years ago
Oops! A correction. I see the background has been done. So it is complete.
