Found this metal detecting in SD and trying to identify its origin. Can you help? It looks like copper, but the back is gone. It looks like a lion on either side and a coat of arms with lion in the center. I can't make out what all the letters say, which could possible solve this mystery. Thanks for looking

SD is a strange place to find an English uniform button if not a copy from somebody's blazer etc.. Uniform buttons can be researched rather easily. Start with 18th century Eng. buttons 1st.

First someone said it might be from east India company, then someone else said it's not British ,but maybe Dutch or Swedish. I've looked online and haven't seen anything similar. Guess I'll keep looking.

Keep looking. Not my job. SD just seemed to be a strange place to find an original uniform button. You might ck my profile to see the Eng. button I found. It was solid & gold washed from 1805-1815 as I remember. Found that locally in St. Maarten. Bon chance.

Sorry to chime in late. Your button bears the coat of arms of Belgium. No idea why it would turn up in SD.

Good show Chris. So many coat of arms from European countries are so similar, that I don't follow the differences as it's not my field. (Still trying to figure out what my field is) Strange area for it to be found. Must be a later import somehow. There is definitely a story behind it.

Marked on bottom ribbon is “EMAINVIENDI. I the one you posted (brass front and wire loop shank) metal back and a much larger one in silver . The front and loop shank repels a magnet . Back metal

I am finding out more info. There’s two spellings. The button is worn and flat. The shield is crowned with the (Dutch) royal crown and supported by two lions on each side. The lion in the center of the shiel is holding seven arrows that stand for the seven provinces of the Union of Utrecht. The other paw is holding a sword Argent. Can’t see it because the image is worn flat. Like a coin.
