This is looks like a solid piece of wood but it is hollow. The top and bottom are exactly the same. It is about 7.125 inches tall by around 4.5 inches wide. There's a hole on the side of it and when I stick my little finger in it I can feel the inner edge. There is no way to open it to get inside that I can see. If anyone knows something about this object or has any ideas about what this could possibly be please share it with me. Thanks

Looks like one of those barrels the Saint Bernards used to carry "spirits" to stranded mountaineers. :)
I do have 2 St Bernard's , if you send this barrel to Spain I can use it for what it should be used for, lol. I have no idea what it is, it's a interesting barrel.
I agree it does look like a barrel that could be hung around a Saint Bernard's neck. I think it's about the right size.

I'm assume that it's old enough and could have could have been used to store gunpowder. Makes more sense that any liquid since how would you clean it and mice would get into it and....grosss. lol BOB

If the liquid is brandy, they do age some brandies in wooden casks for many years. Of course there will have to be a cork or a stopper of some kind to keep the liquid in and the mice out. If it was filled with gunpowder then all you would need is a fuse. Then you'll have a nice little bomb.
I've just shown this to a friend of mine he seems to think it might be a wooden hot water bottle. At the opening is it threaded or smooth. Food for thought.

The opening is not threaded. I think it has something to do with a game, or a child's toy. My parents were very big on games, toys, and folk art. Thanks for your input.
My friend has made another comment, could it be a Croquet hammer without the stick, just a thought, because your parents were into game.

My parents had a few antique Croquet sets (I still have part of one somewhere) the mallets are shaped differently and they are solid. I also thought of a head of a mallet but the top and bottom are recessed, and there would be signs that it was used in that way. So the mystery goes on. Thanks
I don't know exactly what purpose would be...but agree with possibility of flask for St. Bernard
