Here is a beautifully maintained chair inherited from Granny. I have no idea of what style it is or why it is so short! I would greatly appreciate anything that can be offered by way of identifying this chair and, in particular, why it was built on such short legs! Thanks in advance for your opinions.
Is it possible this could have been made in the late 1920s/1930s?
I'll explain why. There're all these elements from Georgian/Victorian furniture, but at the same time the building lacks the gracile forms of those, even if they could someties look pretty heavy, there's something about the proportions that makes me think of something newer that those styles. And then the armrests... the way they're built reminds me so much of art deco furniture! t being short also makes me think of that period.
I have to say I don't know much of American furniture except that even following the English style it showed strong variations. So i could be totally wrong.
It's a voltaire style armchair, named after the French writer Voltaire. It looks like a late copy made for us normal folk. There might be some holes on the arms where the tacks once sat for the padding but I.doubt it ever had mechanics. Some of the original ones had levers in the arms to adjust the position....
