A couple of days ago, commenting on Amber's post "Back to finding Photos" (http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/129698-back-to-finding-photos?in=user) arised the subject of collecting a certain kind of photos.
Although my first old photograph was bought in 2001, right before going to the US -and i took it with me-, I started getting them "with a purpose" about three years ago. I first started buying visit carte-de-visites and a couple of cabinet photos of handsome men and soldiers (yes, I know, too gay :) ). And one day, looking for them on ebay, I found the kind of old photographs I could love: people standing by pieces of Art Nouveau furniture or sat on Art Nouveau chairs. In these I can find everal things i love:
a) old portraits
b) a display of Art Nouveau design
c) a display of clothes people wore in the early 1900s
d) a collection of Art Nouveau graphics (at both the studio's stamp and at the back of the photo)
One more thing I loved about it was the format: not a standard carte-de-visite, but a narrower, more vertical looking one that I guess was the fashion in Germany at the time (beacause most of them came from Germany, a country where Art Nouveau -or Jugendstil- was thoroughly extended in every aspect of life... even social housing!- )
On pic1, which is my favoutite one here. you can see two photos: one of a man and the other of his son. There's no doubt they were taken during the same session and the same elements appear in both... I think it really is great I was able to get both of them.

I've always thought the value of a collection lies in the collector's criteria to create it and, of course, the final result that derives directly from it...
My photography collection is really unimportant (as you all know I have so many fields of interests), but after all, when I die, what someone will find will be a more or less coherent group of things. They will probably won't value it, but as far as just one will and think of what made me reunite such a collection, it will be worth it.

You made me laugh and laugh with your "too gay" comment. I have a number of gay friends who collect old photos of hot men. Why not? It's specific and full of cuties.
I look for less posed photos. Also smiles. Wackiness.
My Mom looks for knives. Kitchen scenes, sharpening, butchers etc

I do admire your discipline in collecting. I think my hubby is right, I just chase the shiny. Ooohhhh, look at that! Look over here! It all combines eventually.

LOL Well, the first reason to start buying them was that one: getting pics of cute guys!. I also wanted to use those photographs for my drawings, which I have never done by the way, but I'm working on it (mostly planning, nothing about doing :) ) In any case, it's great having those pictures. I guess I'll soon share a post focused on cute guys ;)
The only problem I've got is the multiple paralell collections... so whnever i say "Ooohhhh, look at that! Look over here! " I'll get at least twenty or thirty items of that kind :)

Not really, have you? I knew there was a jugendstil vase, but as never knew what it was, I never paid more attention to it...
I have absolutely no idea, lol, sorry. I was just curious. I like looking in the background of old photos for any vases or pots, sad i know. Rarely recognise them.

I love these portraits with Art Nouveau furniture. They say so much about the period than boring close-ups or painted backgrounds!
Me too, the more furniture & 'clutter' in an old photo the better :)
