We are told that Mohawk gas began its refinery in the late 20s or early 30s in Bakersfield Calif. If you know your history, that was not a good time to be starting a new business as it was right in the beginning of the Great Depression and small oil companies usually had to borrow a lot of money to get up and going but this was a refinery producing about 1500 barrels a day in1932 and by 1934 got a new Cracker added to the plant and was up to 9000 barrels a day. Like all small fish they eventually got eaten by a larger fish along the line. If you are lucky and find any original Mohawk globes, signs or memorabilia you have scored big time as there are a lot more collectors than suppliers! This Mohawk pump is a little hard to make out as it is in a line of pumps and the pix has been rotated and changed until the clarity isn't wonderful, but it is still a Mohawk pump and pretty cute.
