This beautiful vase recently arrived from Japan and I think is indicative of the skilled glass artists at work presently there.

Although art glass has a relatively short history in Japan, the manufacture of art glass for the Western market in the 60s and 70s started a whole new arts discipline, and Japan is now home to a number of worldwide respected glass art colleges and studios.

Matsuura Akane is one of the many glass artists making a living in Japan today. Born in 1963 she appears to have worked in a number of glass studios before graduating in 1997 from Tama Art Studio. Today she works at the Azumino Glass North Studio and sells her works from a number of worldwide dealers. She has been exhibited at many National and International Arts Exhibitions and has been added to the collections of the Notojima Museum of Glass and the Corning Museum of Glass.

This vase is so beautiful in it's simplicity but shows incredible skill in it's use of colour melding and casing.

I know this is very different to other Japanese glass I collect but to me it is the continuing thread of Japanese Glass. I hope you like it!

I'm not skiting here Kevin but I am really happy to have this piece.
Just shows where glass can go - certainly has a bit of a Scandinavian influence.

I see anything but simplicity there, maybe I just didn't get Your point :D

      Thanks MacArt.
I guess I mean the glass is simple in it has no surface texture or mixing of colours.
It is very clean in it's design.

You're right, it is quite a complex piece when you think about the technique!

Japanese have always had sophisticated taste for beauty, simple and never too ornate or over decorated.
