We found this in the old apple house building on property we just acquired in Western New York. The property used to be a popular apple orchard back in the early 1900's. The tool is made of iron and very rusty. We weren't able to see any identifying marks on it. Please help us identify it. Thank you!
Maybe a masher of some kind?
Looks like a masher to make squeezing s. Pretty small scale but if you were only making a few jugs you didn't anything more. I have only seen them used to make hard cider, usually in a cellar or back room where nobody could see. It was used before a press and also after if you couldn't afford a press. I won't say I ever indulged in hard cider but if you mix a pint of Segram's 7 with a gallon jug of squeezing's it goes down smooth and easy. Just don't try walking after you drink it.
That sounds like fun! Thank you so much for your help. My family and I really appreciate it! Walking into the old apple house was like walking back in time. It is so neat!
It's a tool to handle and lead hogs around. I have one like it. I thought that I would never see another. To use, you ratchet open the tool and put the round wire end in the hogs mouth. You then ratchet closed the cast part tight (not too tight) over the snout. The cast part has an arch that fits over the hogs snout and leans the tool forward. This way you can lead the hog like a leash or handle to have him go wherever you want him to go. After you lead him to where you want, you ratchet the tool open and the hog will be released. This one is quite humane, some of the early hog holders, like Champion or Dr. Reinhart holders were much more harsh and if the hog twisted or fought you, you could harm and even break the snout of the animal. .....hotairfan
