I bought this £5 chair today in a charity shop. I've been wanting to do a DIY paintjob on some old furni, so I bought @ random. Upon taking it home, think I like it as is.

Wow, what a find! That chair is worth more than 5 bucks.
It's from an Austrian furniture maker in Vienna at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They were father and son.
They worked out how to bend wood and make it look decorative without it snapping. Later it became their trademark and factories popped up all over Europe. They were even suppliers to the Spanish royal family.
They went on to merge with Thonet, a luxury furniture maker still going in Vienna. Their chairs cost a fortune today.
Like I said, nice find and certainly worth a bit but the paint job might take something off the value.
P.S IF YOU TRY TO RESTORE IT, DON'T DAMAGE THE LABEL. Best let a.specialist do it ;)
