Can anyone tell me what is this tool? Is it for woodworking, metalworking, leatherworking, or what? It came in a box of wood lathe chisels I bought at a flea market. It does not appear to be something someone simply made up. On the shank there is stamped "PAT APPL FOR", but nothing else. The seven rollers are sharp edged and separated by what might be aluminum washers. From the angle of the tool, it appears to be something that is held in both hands and then rolled across something on the table. I am a fairly experienced metal worker (have done lots of car restorations... you name it) and have done some wood turning, and collect old tools, but this one has me stumped! Any help out there? Thanks.
If you hold the metal end gently and crank the wooden handle would the metal end then spin?
It is not a metal "end" but metals "ends". Each of the seven steel rollers, and also their spacer washers, spin independently and freely. From the odd angle of the shaft (it does not have right angle bends), holding the end(s) and trying to crank the wooden handle would be awkward, in my opinion.
I see now that my third pic was not representative of what I wanted to show. I have substituted another shot showing how the tool is angled. If held in both hands it then seems comfortable to roll it across a flat surface, as it were. Hope this helps.
OK, I will take your word for it. But I will also bet it never rolled over anything. Maybe inside something but not over it. We will see what the others come up with. Fun item.
