I purchased a wonderful book yesterday at the local Flea. 'Hope's Costumes of the Ancients'. I've done some research but now am a bit confused. The book inside clearly states Second Edition 1809, and it has 200 engravings. My research showed the first printing was in 1809 with 200 engravings. The second was apparently in 1812 with 300 engravings. I don't understand why it says 'Second Edition' but only has 200 engravings. Can anyone please possibly tell me anything about what I have here?
There is a big difference between "edition" and "printing" - this book was published in two volumes - you have the second edition (or second volume). - The books "Costumes of the Ancients" was published in 1809 and the books published in 1812 were titled "Designs of Modern Costumes"
Thank you and excuse my ignorance, I am not very well versed in books. I have always been intrigued by the engravings. So this was originally published as a 2 book set? Volume/edition 1 & 2? So this was indeed printed in 1809? Do yu know how many engravings there were in Volume/edition 1? Thanks again.
